چکیده

Recent studies suggest that liver cirrhosis is reversible after administering oral nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy to patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. However, few studies have addressed whether esophageal varices can regress after such therapy. We report a case of complete regression of esophageal varices during entecavir therapy in patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis, suggesting that complications of liver cirrhosis such as esophageal varices can regress after the long-term suppression of HBV replication.

Effect of entecavir in the treatment of patients with hepatitis B virus-related compensated and decompensated cirrhosis.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (CHB) infection is a burden on global healthcare and is associated with a higher risk of serious sequelae, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The clinical application of entecavir as a treatment for CHB has produced positive outcomes, and so is an attractive form of pharmacological therapy. However, little data exists comparing the safety and efficacy of...

Regression of esophageal varices and splenomegaly in two patients with hepatitis-C-related liver cirrhosis after interferon and ribavirin combination therapy

Some recent studies have found regression of liver cirrhosis after antiviral therapy in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver cirrhosis, but there have been no reports of complete regression of esophageal varices after interferon/peg-interferon and ribavirin combination therapy. We describe two cases of complete regression of esophageal varices and splenomegaly after interferon-al...

Predictors of esophageal varices in patients with HBV-related cirrhosis: a retrospective study

BACKGROUND All patients with liver cirrhosis are recommended to undergo an evaluation of esophageal varices (EV) to assess their risk of bleeding. Predicting the presence of EV through non-invasive means may reduce a large number of unnecessary endoscopies. This study was designed to develop a predictive model for varices in patients with Hepatitis B virus-related cirrhosis. METHODS The retro...

Validity of an automated algorithm using diagnosis and procedure codes to identify decompensated cirrhosis using electronic health records

Viral hepatitis-induced cirrhosis can progress to decompensated cirrhosis. Clinical decompensation represents a milestone event for the patient with cirrhosis, yet there remains uncertainty regarding precisely how to define this important phenomenon. With the development of broader treatment options for cirrhotic hepatitis patients, efficient identification of liver status before evolving to de...
